Okay, you've caught me, I have no fucking idea what Oi truly means. It's just that I'm drunk and decided to post in here.
Lotus666 ZooKeeper |
It means "listen up Mister"...or..."pay attention"! |
Hello Newman 2001 Monkey |
True, Lotus. But if you listen to this record which is about to become a major hit and is entitled with that very same word, the last thing you want to do to *this* is pay attention! |
manic_224 ZooKeeper |
How can you not know what 'oi' means? |
PixieChic Monkey |
Mmmmmmm... |
Jogger Monkey |
It's no different than America's "DUDE" Or, "DUUUUUDE" |
Jogger Monkey |
I must say though, thinking about it, Dude is a little more versatile than Oi. |
Lotus666 ZooKeeper |
O-K. Newman...do you agree with me here? Jogger...how is DUDE the same as OI? For the life of me, I can't equate the two... And isn't DUDE normally prefixed with YO!? (Which to me is the equivalent of OI!) |
manic_224 ZooKeeper |
Oi is nothing like dude. Oi is an exclamation, like "oi! what you playing at?" or "oi! what you doing?" It is also used to catch someones attention. |
Hello Newman 2001 Monkey |
Hmm. 'Oi, Where's My Car?' That actually sounds like a better film though! Still, if someone was nicking my chips (happens often) and I said "Dude!" to them they'd probably think I was complimenting them on their chip-pilfering talents. |
Case B Monkey |
No, Jogger is actually somewhat right. A lot of Americans (myself included, sometimes) simply use "Dude!" in order to get someone's attention (listen up! equivalent), but it also works as an interjection as a reply to someone else's statement, like, "Dude, that's kind of weird." Overuse of the word however, results in marking you a "Bro" - Bros are the kind of guys who 'cruise around' in their white Ford pick-up trucks, wearing their baseball caps sideways (usually close-cut or shaved head), with the wifebeater on in an attempt to look cool, and they always maintain the "hard-ass" scowl on their face. Bros are easy to spot, and can be found wherever you hear the term "Dude" used in abundance.

Thanks for the back-up, manic. ![]() I STILL can't see that DUDE and OI are inter-changeable. Perhaps it's that whole american/english divide... |
Hello Newman 2001 Monkey |
'Two countries seperated by a common language'. As some probably important bloke once said. |
djgaming Monkey |
Oi! what do you think your doing? Duuude what do you think are you doing? What do you think your doing dude? I think that although "Oi" has it's limitation's, compared to "dude", it is the more commanding of the two slang words, whilst "dude" is by far the more humorous of the two. Hyuck, I laugh fit to split when someone says dude, yes sir, M-O-O-N, that spells DJ's a waste of fucking space. |
djgaming Monkey |
Isn't it a bit early to be taking ellicit drugs Tostito? Oh wait a minute there is the possibility of a time diffrence. ![]() |
Tostito ZooKeeper |
It's a reference. Ignorance and smarm don't quite match up, so shush and maintain your composure, fag boy. |
catapault007 Monkey |
Tostitos laws, Yes |
FatJohnny ZooKeeper |
All this talk of "oi", and no mention of the Jews. Or punk rock. Oi vey. |
Hello Newman 2001 Monkey |
Ah yes, what does 'oi' mean when used by Jewish people that you usually see on TV? |
Nick Zbu ZooKeeper |
I was lead to believe the Jewish version was called 'Oy,' as in 'Oy Vey.' And Manic, it is easy to mess these things up. It's like the difference between the American period and British/Australian full stop. |
Jogger Monkey |
So when a woman in America is having her period, a British/Australian woman is having a full stop? Or, is the pad called a full stoper? If she pulled it out would she get a full flow? Period stopper |
Withnail Monkey |
OI? |
manic_224 ZooKeeper |
Jogger, No, it means that when an American says period, there's a big bloody mark at the end of the sentence. Full stop. |
Jogger Monkey |
LoL Manic, that's clever. |
Nick Zbu ZooKeeper |
Manic, That blood comes from killing people, we'll have you know! Like mimes and terrorists and stuff. |
manic_224 ZooKeeper |
No, it doesn't. You really didn't listen too closely in biology class did you? |
Nick Zbu ZooKeeper |
In America it does. We have to get rid of the runoff from the Civil War, you know. |
Jogger Monkey |
Really nothing to say. I just chuckled at the though of making every one wonder what was posted here. |
Britt ZooKeeper |
Sweet Jesus. When I say "oy/oi" it means "holy fuck" or "good lord", something along those lines. "Dude", on the other hand, if I EVER use it (which is very rare), is merely short for "what the hell did you do that for, ya simp!" Any other uses for these so-called words is simply unacceptable. Nice Stand reference there, Tostito. |
