At the beginning of this year, Harry Potter was apparently a big thing. I wouldn't know, at that time I was more busy doing other things DVD-related with my free time to actually care what the latest buzz was. In fact, what annoyed me more was the outrageous price on the hardcover versions ($25-30?) that a lot of yuppies in my area of the world were more than willing to buy at the cost of fighting with their own ilk.

But even before September, the whole Harry Potter thing seemed to be dying. Sure, it was there and people knew what it was, but the whole affair stank of a 'who cares' smell to it. It had been said, been done, and was over. So now what? In between shows, I get to see Katie Couric in a witch's outfit in promos for her hour long thinly-veiled commercial for all things Rowling. And yet, I still don't care.

So, is the Harry Potter craze over? Have we just stopped caring, even before the 11th? Opinions?

You better not be saying that to my nieces and nephews. They're nuts over Harry Potter!
I admit I've never read Harry Potter but I am definitely interested in seeing the movie when it comes out. If only for Robbie Coltrane and Alan Rickman (both of whom are in the movie)

I think that we should see how either a)the movie and/or b)the next Harry Potter book do when they come out before we declare this a dead cult.

Frankly, in the wake of September 11, we could all use a little magic.

I agree with THAT sentiment, DC! Wish to see this movie myself (TOO many good movies out!)...and intend to buy the book to read on my flight over to the UK!

I know this is sad but.....
I have read the books, I will be going to see the film, and whats more, so have my whole family, and a large number of my friends. Those that haven't read the books yet are being slowly converted.
This is a craze that probably won't die for a while because there is way too much money to be made out of it. At least in this country.

Saw an elderly man reading a Harry Potter book on my flight down to Canberra the other day...so yes, it is popular with all age groups by the looks of it.

Had a brief flick through "Philosopher's Stone"...looks very well written...DEFINITELY buying it!

Well, I finally saw "The Phantom Menace" yesterday for the very first time. Which means that I might try out Harry Potter once all the hype and bother go away.

Plus, reading a popular novel often results in the ending being given away.

Definately not in the land down under , just go into any toy store and the first thing you'll see is the huge array of Harry Potter merchandise parents are being brainwashed into believing is the only thing thier kids want for Christmas . [ AND THE MOVIE WON"T BE REALEASED FOR ANOTHER ELEVEN DAYS HERE

Fiona,

I worked in a toy store when Phantom Menace came out...hence my lack of an urge to actually sit down and watch it. Granted, since "Attack of the Clones" is getting bad reviews, I think I'll indulge myself once and see it in the theater.

Fiona,

Are you mad, woman?? Of course I'll go see Lord of the Rings, and for the following reasons:

1) Some of JRR Tolken's best work
2) Directed by Peter "Dead Alive/Bad Taste/Meet the Feebles" Jackson, who has wisely done everything in secret and used the talents of Christopher Lee to play Saruman.

Trust me, I will be there when it arrives stateside. I've been waiting for a very long time!

All times are ET
