I thought I'd share my own personal evolutionary tale of my religious beleif, enjoy.1. True Beleiver- Beleived the Bible and the 'Christian Philosophy' at face value as told by my (would-be missionary) grandparents, and American Baptist Parent. 2. Dont like going to chruch- As above, only didnt like going to church. 3. Organized Religion is bad- Thought church was silly and unnessescary, but still beleived. 4. Doubter- Started to doubt Christianity, still held core beleifs however. 5. New-Ager- Started looking to various other religions via research and experimentation (from Hinduism and Buddhism to Wicca and back). 6. Holdout- For a time I still beleived in god, but thought all religions were somewhat hokey. 7. Agnostic- Didnt know if god existed or not (kind of in denial about being athiest I suppose). 8. Athiest- Finally decides that God and religion is a sham. |

I'm sure there's a nine or ten somewhere, it's just I'm too lazy to think of them . |

9 and 10 would be a mix of 4 and 5 as a sect. Then you end up with Waco, then you end up with Armageddon. |

You know, when I come right down to it, I live my life almost completely dichotomously. I try to adhere to my religion as strictly as possible, and yet I'm fascinated and excited by the marvels and achievements of science. Some people might call me a hypocrite. Then I go like this: |

I don't have any belief system. I find it eases the pain of life. I mean, what kind of God would restrict the eating of fish??? |

Only a God who favours the fish!Don't you believe in science either? There are a few of its "zealots" out there practising now, trying to figure out how to nullify the authority-questioning gene. |

<Seriousness> I personally disagree with religion, but it isnt nessiscarily harmless (it's one of those neutral things), and I hold as much contempt for science fundamentalists and religous ones. They are both closed minded people who are trying to force their beleif on others, which is definitely not cool. When it comes down to it, religion, science, and philosophy are all different methods of trying for the same goal: the search for truth. I personally favour science in that regard because (unlike religion and philosophy) it doesnt claim to have all the answers (in fact, in it's 'purest' form, it claims to have no answers at all, just educated guesses). Science (and the people and politics assosciated with it) can be just as fundamentalist, closed minded, silly, and self-delusional as philosophy or religion. As for Darwin, I'd like to insert a small peice of a somewhat seperate rant here. I find it quite odd and silly when people say things like "well, Darwin was very religious", or "so were Einstein and Newton", ad nauseum. I find this odd, since it implies that just because these men felt a certain way, we should too, and because they were so insightful in one regard, we should listen to everything they say as the scientific equivalent of 'the gospel truth'. Whether it be science or religon, I find it silly to listen to a bunch of dead guys who decided to write some stuff down, and follow it word for word all of the time. I think I'm done now, thanks for not just skipping this post . </Seriousness>BTW, I will be gone for the next week, I am heading off for a *gaah!* family reunion, in case anyone cares that is . |

Well, to be honest, I don't really care. I mean, what is the point of questioning our origins if we will find out definitely within time? If there is a God, we will find out, and if there is not, then we will find out...just yabbling about how WE THINK a God would want us to act (even IF he wants us to act) is just pointless and silly. Besides, what is the point of 'acting' good to get into a fictional heaven if God can tell anyway? Why try to trick God?Either way, I'd rather spend my time on Earth just doing my own thing and not harming people intentionally. That way, wherever I'm going, at least I can know that I got there on my own two feet, not because I want to get to some place which I'm not really accustomed, IF THAT PLACE EVEN EXISTS. So, basically, I'll see what happens and deal with it then. Until then, I'm partying. On an endnote, I think the only real truth that I can say about religion is from the Red Dwarf episode "Waiting for God": "So religion is just another way for people to be rotten to each other?"

You're going to listen to a guy who bites his toenails? Bleh. Besides, people don't always act good to try to impress a Supreme Being or anyone else. I wouldn't want to try to distance myself too much, just because I would see it as missed opportunity.Iridium, the reason that the statement about certain scientists is that some of the religion-bashers use science to dismiss the religious types. They quote the scientists to argue their science arguments, but just dismiss the religious beliefs of the same men or women. All-science fanatics are weird, all-religious fanatics are weird. But all of us here are very fuckin' weird. |

The thing about religion and religous arguments is that religous beleif has no hard evidence, or good old fashioned proof, just alot of bullshit said by a bunch of guys a long time ago. That having been said, I am not and never have been a 'religion basher' or 'science fanatic', those two people piss me off alot too. The way I see it, there's not harm in beleiving something like that so long as you arent using it (or it using you) to carry out some bad deed against others (same as science, although historically religion is far more often guilty of this, so perhaps it deserves a somewhat larger degree of scrutiny). My point is: I dont care what you beleive, just dont be a big elitist asshole about the whole thing, we're all here for a short time, and no single one or any group of us is so fucking important that we need to go and treat other people like shit over it. Get the fuck over yourselves! |

I agree. Through, to be honest, I have never been privy to those who use science to bash religion...could you throw me a few links of said people? I like seeing the opposite side of an argument. |

What Rockjock said was right though. Evolution as an explanation for how the Earth was created was mostly used for trying to prove that the entire universe as we know was not "made" in 6 days. ------------------ For those of ya'll that wear fanny packs! |
