*apologies to Manic for using her icon*In the new movie "Bridget Jones's Diary," Renee Zillanger (sic) had to gain thirty pounds to portray the title character, a 32 year old single woman who acts pretty much normal (drinks, smokes, has vices and 'imperfections,' etc.). And a few nights back, a local news anchor filled out the 5 o'clock hour by jacking off over this fact: "Oh, Hollywood is SOOOO understanding of overweight women! Oh, is this the next Caryn Manheim fad? Can overweight women go out in public without looking like mannequins? Uh? Uh? UH??" The Bullshit Factor: Renee Z-whatever, even with thirty pounds on her, is still thin. Judging from her past movie appearance, she actually looks healthy now. But in no way does she even look like a real woman. Hence the hypocrisy: how the hell can everybody start claiming that a young actress has 'enlightened' Hollywood by actually coming up to normal weight and looking like a human again? What the hell makes everyone who makes films think that the thinner you are is directly related to your health? It's insulting! And yet, when some actress comes up to normal weight, all these critics (women ones who should KNOW what a woman looks like, natch!) start jacking off about this. Oh, yeah, Hollywood is being taught a lesson..that they will forget come the next nude scene/love scene/American Pie ripoff. It makes me ill. I don't care what Hollywood does, I just wish that some idiots would realize this is just hype and leave it be. Let the idiot bitches who choose to act and starve die. But don't say this is the second coming of normalcy. I don't see how people who make a million for three-four weeks of work can be considered normal. |

(self-righteous bastard below) *Zellwenger - too biased to emit opinion. Oh, yeah, and one day we're gonna get married.
*The thin thing - There's one idea subjacent to all fashion behaviours: not everyone can have it. Not every man can buy Armani. Not every woman is born with blond hair. Restriction creates respect and awe. More Armani. Blonder hair. Slimer figure. Bigger breasts. What?! Everyone is wearing this?! Doing that?! It's out. Then there's competition. She's thin-»I'm thinner. Not to mention the guy's version -<"Buff parade"> My point is, people choose to get into the game(God knows I'm in it too); people choose in what degree their in it. But it's basically their fault/responsability, so it's mostly their own friggin problem if they go through live emulating dumb behaviours. Or, like the caffeteria woman said on The Simpsons, "More testicles mean more iron" [This message has been edited by For Whom the Bell Tolls (edited 04-21-2001).] |

Hot but not "cover material", apparently quote: Zellweger Too Portly for Harper's Bazaar It looks like it's time for sultry Nurse Betty star Renée Zellweger to waif goodbye to that Harper's Bazaar cover. According to the New York Daily News' Mitchell Fink, the 31-year-old actress has been denied a scheduled appearance on the October cover of the fashion mag because of her weight. The star of such acclaimed fare as A Taste for Killing and The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (along with such lesser-know flicks as Jerry Maguire and Me, Myself, & Irene) has been busy filming the upcoming Bridget Jones' Diary, for which she gained some poundage, reportedly by scarfing down PB&J sandwiches and slices of pizza. Fink reports that the Harper's editors saw the cover photos and promptly said "uh-uh," supposedly because of Zellweger's new heftiness. Of course, denials are a-flyin': "She looked very uncomfortable," a rep for the magazine said, "and as a result, it didn't make for an inviting cover." Zellweger's spokeswoman voiced a different opinion, saying, "[Editor] Kate Betts and her staff felt that the weight gain, which was for a movie role, was not the image Harper's wanted to present to the public — an actress 10 pounds overweight." Of course, it's all a she-said, they-said at this point, but a quick glance at some typical Harper's pics suggests that body shape just might be an issue for the mag's editors — the waif look dominates.
