For those who don't know, courtsey of Dictionary.Com: quote:
cli·ché (kl-sh) n. A trite or overused expression or idea: “Even while the phrase was degenerating to cliché in ordinary public use . . . scholars were giving it increasing attention” (Anthony Brandt).
These are found in most American movies. So, how many can you name? Let me start: THE 'MY BEST FRIEND DOESN'T WANT TO GET MARRIED BECAUSE HE'S SCARED OF COMMITMENT' CLICHE.--A typical staple of the '80s 'Raunchy Teen' Genre. Come on, I know you have a few! Any cliche will do! Just remember...one per post. |

Woman tries to get away from pursuers by going through woods, she trips on a tree root (or something else), she gets killed/captured/raped/whatever.Something like that happened (I think) in A View To A Kill and I'm sure in several other movies. ------------------ "Wherever me chum Harry Potts is...in Heaven or Hell. I hope he puts in a good word for me when I get there. At least I'll be out of here." |

The all-time biggie...The "Stupid College Grads Go Into A Haunted House For A Dare Because They Don't Believe It Is Haunted And End Up Checking Out All The Scary Noises One By One And Being Killed One At A Time Because They Are Too Dumb To Stick Together" cliche... Haven't they heard of the old saying "THERE'S SAFETY IN NUMBERS", hmmm?! Dumbasses...

Yep, that one is the most common.I'm sure it happened in the Friday the 13th movies - I never watched them, for the record. I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole. I'm sure it occurred in Blair Witch Project and many other horror movies as well. Whoever comes up with scenes like that has been watching way too much Scooby Doo. |

Ah well, the Iridum enigma lives on.How about "You are the perfect guy for me and I love you but there is this other stranger who walked into town and he's really great in bed so I'll just jerk you around until he considers maybe talking to me." I refer you to the story of my life, now playing in almost every other theatre. |

This one you're gonna have to check out www.moviecliches.com Also, "Little team of cronical losers (any sport will do) gets big boost with the arrival of a new coach/player. The team gets better as the season progresses. Then it all comes down to the final game of the season, against a team of bullies, a team coached by a sadistic psycho. The ex-losers start the game well, then there's a twist and the bad guys are on top. Big psychological hit. The losers are desperate. Then another twist. The hero manages to pull the team together. All the little losers use their special tricks (even the fat kid contributes, proving everybody deserves a chance even if you're "not as good as"); so they recovered, but that's not enough. One last touchdown/hoop/homerun/whatever is needed for the ex-losers to be champions. Time-out. Strategy. Get back to the field. Concentrate. Run. Pass. (Slow motion) Can he? Can he do it? (Climax) Yes he can. Hero scores final touchdown/hoop/homerun/whatever and clinches the final victory. Hero is raised in arms. Kiss sweetheart. Throws helmet in the air. Freeze frame; credits And now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go rethink my life for a moment [This message has been edited by For Whom the Bell Tolls (edited 04-22-2001).] |

That cliche happened in Ladybugs, [i]Little Giants[/b], and many others. I think they ought to give it a rest.------------------ "Wherever me chum Harry Potts is...in Heaven or Hell. I hope he puts in a good word for me when I get there. At least I'll be out of here." |

Or they can change it, like have everything against the heroes until the very end, where the disabled little Timmy shoots for the Hail Mary shot with one second left on the clock and he....MISSES!! HORRIBLY!! Then his parents come out and disown him. His coach punches him in the back of the head. His teammates steal his pants and drag him around the track. And his girlfriend dumps him for the opposing teams star quarterback/basketball star/etc. THE END. See? It works so realistically. |

Apparently I've come in a bit late on this thread.... But anyways, My favorite (or least favorite) cliche has to be the "There is a nice happy family, living in Anytown, USA, and they have their 3 kids, the cute little one, the pre-teen one, and the ignorant, rebellious teen boy, the dog for cuteness value, and the parents that have small little fights over stupid things, and make up, and then are always in agreement on the big things. Then, teen boy gets involved in some sort of "bad/immoral" doings (like drugs, 'satanism', vandalism, cheating on a test, pre-marital sex *gasp!*, anything middle america doesnt like) and he does this, gets caught, and he and his parents have an arugment, it blows up, and eventually they make up emotionally, and everyone is fine, and go back to watching their TV, drinking tang, and reading the Oprah book of the month"...Until the next episode of course. </Rant> |

Irid (and hi again!),I wouldn't know those cliches...but I do remember their emotionally-overblown equals from the '80s. Anybody remember those 'special' (aka 'Please Gag Me With My Colon') episodes of [i]The Hogan Family{/i] where Jason Bateman single-handedly destroyed his career by being a Michael J. Fox clone? Anyway, good call on '7th Heaven,' Case B. Good eye.

This is so true. I love that cliche How about:Cheerleader girl, has everything, looks, money, supporting family, brains, but one day meets rebellious kid, drives around after dark, falls in love, he goes to jail for silly crimes, she rescues him, they steal a car to skip the country, armed only with a tin of sardines and two slices of bread, and the police catch up with them - so they drive off a cliff.THE END I saw that in a film one time ------------------ Solidarity, Love and unity, set me free with a bullet and a gun |

or the one where the hero and his nemises have a massive fight at the end. And just when ur suppose to think the hero is beaten he comes back and opens up a can o' wh00p ass (or tushy as marge would say ) on him and saves the day pffft. or the one where u get ur hopes up only to have the let down, time and time again. |

Off topic, I would love to see Baz Luhrman get his ass kicked. I know, he's a good director and everything, but a good ass-whupping would clear his head from another cliche: the Spielburg Syndrome.**Spielburg Syndrome is the remarkable ability to take any kind of topic and mush it down for easy public consumption. Face it, the man has been swimming in circles since Jaws and hasn't made a movie worthy of the false praise heaped on it since then. Also, I know footnotes are a dying art, hence why I'm doing this. |
