Yup! After having "Revelation of the Daleks" released here last month and "Time-Flight" and the non-buggy version of "Edge of Destruction/Missing Years" coming this month, America is hit by MORE Doctor Who!

In May, we finally get the pivotal "Tenth Planet" episode!

In July, things go down a little when the remastered first Dalek story is re-released here. This may seem a bit anti-climatic until you realize that North America is barren when it comes to uncut re-releases.

But, in September, we get TWO Doctor Who Releases: the immortal "Five Doctors" and the uncut (for the first time on these shores) "ROBOTS OF DEATH!!" And, to cap this off, we get the Colin Baker story "Attack of the Cybermen!!"

YAY!! *starts saving pennies*

Well, now that I'm waiting anxiously for word on the remainder of the American Doctor Who release schedule (October 2001 to the New Year), I'm taking a few guesses about the next step in DVD releases for the BBC.

Since Pertwee, T. Baker, Davison, and McCoy have gotten a DVD to them and the Beeb plans on producing at least one DVD to each of the Doctors, here's my suggestions:

HARTNELL:

An Unearthly Child--This is the only real Season One story I would prefer to see on DVD; "The Daleks" is being re-released over here in remastered form on tape anyway. Plus, it would be silly to put any episodes on digital due to the fact that they would look the same anyway. Sadly.

The Chase--A nice Dalek Season Two story which might stand up better quality wise than any other before it. Plus, this would prevent me from wasting $40 bucks on the 'Doctor Who Dalek Anniversary Set' which includes this story and "Remembrance of the Daleks.

Time Meddler--Because it hasn't been released yet! Why??

TROUGHTON

THE MOONBASE--Yup, you heard me. It's the only Troughton story that is nearly complete and should be given a reconstruction ala "The Tenth Planet." Plus, I heard there are better looking negatives available.

THE FACELESS ONES--Two episodes (1 & 3) that have yet to see the light of day. Oh, hell, why couldn't the Beeb just create a "Moonbase/Faceless Ones" pack with four episodes, remastered?

TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN--I've heard rumors, but I doubt it, on the word of the Restoration Team.

ICE WARRIORS--I doubt it because it's been released on tape already.

THE WHEEL IN SPACE--Or they could just release all the bits and pieces from Season 5 including Abom. Snowman 2, Enemy 3, and these two episodes (3 & 6).

THE MIND ROBBER--Most popular of the existing-in-full Troughton stories. Most likely.

THE INVASION--Ooh, why couldn't they just reconstruct the missing 2 episodes and remaster this? Hmmm???

THE SEEDS OF DEATH--I hope so; there is no uncut version over in the States and plus the BBC cut plans to re-release it anywhere. Maybe this is it...

WAR GAMES--I wish. Ten episodes on a disc? I doubt it.

T.BAKER (yup, he's popular everywhere and chances are we'll get more of his episodes in disc.. )

REVENGE OF THE CYBERMEN--it's cut over here in the States, and the BBC would be cruel enough to put this out while many, many deserving others go neglected.

PYRAMIDS OF MARS--A fav among fans, but the Restoration Team laughed at us. Very doubtful.

THE DEADLY ASSASSIN--Possibly, it is a Master one and it's cut over here.

TALONS OF WENG-CHIANG--Most likely! Who doesn't love this episode (should be hanged).

INVISIBLE ENEMY--Not out yet, a strict possiblility. First appearance of K9.

UNDERWORLD--yeah, right! The BBC hasn't even released the tape yet...rest assured, it will be one of the last tapes ever released.

CITY OF DEATH--Another favorite, but the BBC plans to re-release in Britain, so who knows?

RETURN OF THE MASTER TRILOGY (Keeper of Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva)--Uhhh...dunno.

C. BAKER

Okay, this is diffcult because it's a crapshoot...only three real possibilities:

VENGEANCE ON VAROS--Possibly the best use of irony in the series to date. Very good chance.

THE TWO DOCTORS--A reunion show and one of the best episodes. I hope this is it.

REVELATION OF THE DALEKS--A lot of material has been cut from this episode, making it prime for the DVD format.

And that's it. Any more suggestions and reasonings?

I would * LUV * to get my hands on some of those (in taped form - I don't own a DVD!). The Chase, The Tenth Planet, The Moonbase ... great. No signs of the Macra Terror???

One comment - what's the point of putting these early filmed episodes on DVD when they can only ever be as good as the film they were originally shot on? or am I missing something here?

Bluebottle,

That's why I didn't put down most Hartnell's stuff: after watching my reconstruction of "Reign of Terror," I realized that if it was put into digital processes to make it clearer, the forest would look like a piece of crap.

But I support Troughton's stuff. I would love to see the Faceless Ones in digital...especially the damaged episode 3.

And Macra Terror? Why can't it be done as a reconstruction on VCD? That would rock.

Good news! I just found out that Colin Baker will be getting his due with the DVD release of "Vengeance on Varos!"

Finally, one of the best 6th Doctor stories on disc form! I wonder what the extras will be...I sure hope a commentary track with Colin will be made available.

I think there was one called "The Trial of the Silurians" or something like that. That was pretty good. Actually I only remember the title because Silurian is a period in the Paleozoic era.

Oh, you mean Jon Pertwee's second story as the Doctor, called "Doctor Who and The Silurians" (actual title) where the Doctor tries to make peace between the Earth's original inhabitants and the human beings. It was so popular a sequel was made a few seasons later with "The Sea Devils," and both races came back in the 5th Doctor story "Warriors of the Deep."

I need to see Silurians soon. Always wanted to, never had the money.

*huggles* Plus, it's good to know that Tom Baker has a sense of humor about his days as the Doctor.

Thanks again, Lotus Wotus.

Mrs Bluebottle and I went to Chadstone shopping centre today - they have an ABC shop there (that's Australian Broadcasting Corporation!).

I was severely tempted. I succumbed. I spent.

I bought The Tenth Planet on tape, and a triple Young Ones set of episodes as well.

I think they did quite a good job with the fourth episode reconstruction.

Was it worth it? You betcha.

The Planet America, where "Friends" is considered entertainment, "ER" is considered dramatic and 'heart-wrenching,' and Pauly Shore still finds work.

So, what are "The Young Ones?"

The Young Ones, Mr Zbu, was an extremely funny English comedy, of the early eighties, about four young guys sharing pretty much a student household and what they got up to.

Three of the guys were Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer and Adrian Edmondson (can't remember the fourth guy who played Mike).

It was totally farcical and violent and "out there".

My favorite was when Viv (Adrian Edmondson) stuck his head out a train window and had it taken off by a train going the other way. Next you see him kicking the head along the railway tracks with the bodyless head abusing the shit out of him.

Fans are strongly recommended to check out Bottom with Rik Mayal and Adrian Edmondson, for similar zany comedy.

Exile, Bluebottle, the rest of the people who hide classic British stuff from me,

I looked at the IMDB and found that out. Sounds like the old American series "Get a Life" which featured shit like that.

By any chance, is any "young Ones" stuff to be found over in the States? Pretty please? With Lotus on top?

UPDATE ON NORTH AMERICAN RELEASES:

THE GOOD NEWS:

In September 2001, I was saving my pennies to buy the first two DVD Doctor Who releases ("The Five Doctors" and "The Robots of Death"). Well, it appears that now I have to buy the THIRD one. That's right, America and Canada will be given a TRIPLE release of discs, the third being Jon Pertwee's "Spearhead from Space."

This will be the first time "Spearhead" will be available in the States in it's uncut form, outside of a PBS station.

THE BAD NEWS:

Since the BBC wants to further the DVD revolution, all planned releases past May (insuring that America gets "The Tenth Planet") have been cancelled at this date. That means no "Daleks: Remastered" or "Attack of the Cybermen."

Sure, I have the original Daleks release (all cloudy and shit) and a bootleg of "Attack" (all cloudy and shit) and I'm happy to get my paws on "Spearhead," but still...I wish we could get more video releases.

*sigh* I'm torn. But glad to see Spearhead being released over here.

Thanks for explaining for me (in my relative absence), exile. Mike the cool person was played by Christopher Ryan, a name I remember well, since there was a Christopher Ryan in my class at school in England (that one had a habit of saying "Haitch" instead of "Aitch" for the letter "H" - a habit that seems to be almost peculiar to Australians!).

To regain the Doctor Who connection, Christopher Ryan played in Doctor Who as Sil's dying companion (or was it his boss?) - Sil was that revoltingly repulsive slug-like creature that ate green slime (played brilliantly over the top by Nabil Shaban)

Oh yes. We forgot Alexei Sayle as one of The Young Ones. He always played the Balowski family (the mad landlords).

Ben Elton co-wrote it, and also often appeared on it in bit-parts.

Vyvyan

Pssst! exile and Lotus: Perhaps we'd better not mention Bottom, or Nick will want to know about that too.

Bluebottle,

Ah, you mean that Chrisopher Ryan played as the 'main Slug guy' in Colin Baker's "Mindwarp?" The immortal (yet oddly weird) story in which Peri is 'killed,' leading to one of the best cliffhangers ever created on Doctor Who???

Okay, so how is Bottom? You might as well tell me.

A few more The Young Ones, just for the heck of it!!

"There you are you bastard. What took you so long" (addendum: I just re-watched that episode and he actually said "It's about time, you bastard!" then his body kicks his head along the tracks like a football.)

p.s. Can't guarantee the copyright on any of these!

Ha, from my favorite episode. Well done super sleuth.

As for Bottom; too late. Already mentioned it a few posts back.

Should we also mention Men Behaving Badly. Or maybe not given the way that was ruined when they tried to make a US version.

Yes, that was the one! For Christopher Ryan, I mean.

As for Bottom, Ade Edmondson and rik Mayall starred - see (P)Rick and Vyvyan above - in similarly revolting and hilarious roles. I'll leave it to exile to expand - he does it so much better than I can!
