All the men who played the Doctor were good actors. But all good actors have to grow into a role, define their character until they play that role with an ease, a confidence and finasse that convinces people that now only are they playing the character, they ARE the character. So, the question: which of the men who played The Doctor captured the essence of the role the fastest?

In my opinion, it was Tom Baker. The other actors took their time developing the Doctor role: Hartnell didn't really get into the Doctor mindset until somewhere in "The Daleks" or "Marco Polo" and such, while Troughton changed his character until it became the one everyone loves in either "The Moonbase" or "Evil of the Daleks." Pertwee? By the time "Inferno" was around, I would say he was the closest. Peter Davison got his character somewhere after "Castrovalva." Colin Baker was able to forge his character the slowest, finally changing his Doctor around "Mark of the Rani" and again at the beginning of "Trial of a Time Lord." And McCoy, sadly (through I'm sure it's not completely his fault), didn't define his character enough, making it a cypher most of the time.

But I think Tom Baker got his Doctor the fastest, from the time the regeneration stopped and he sat up at the beginning of "Robot." If you'll notice, there was no real time of 'finding himself' during the first few episodes. It all was just "Robot" and the character continued until his last dismal season. In fact, "Robot" was one of the last Whos I was able to get and I didn't notice a change from "The Ribos Operation" or even "City of Death." The same character. Not even a slightest change (even through the beginning of either "Seeds of Doom" or "Brain of Morbius" is sorta odd, with the Baker Doctor thinking of Victoria).

But, it's Tom Baker all the way. He got the role by the balls, so to speak, and didn't let go.

Yes i also agree with you about good old Tom, he was funny, whitty, and sarcastic, his facial expressions were to die for, but i also have a soft spot for John Pertwee as he bought a quaint style of eccentricity to the show.

I think Troughton dived straight into his role too - he had to since he more or less pioneered the "change of actor for the same character". He introduced the comedic element quickly too, when he searched for the holy ganta (or however it's spelt!) and rummaged very messily in the chest, finding his recorder and funny hat at the same time (the producers later dispensed with the hat).

He did develop the character further though, which Tom Baker did not - as you say, Baker remained constant to his initial definition of the part.

Having said that, Tom Baker had the longest run (7 years), and he is the one most people remember as being their first Doctor Who encountered (that's certainly Mrs Bluebottle's assertion, anyway).

Wait a minute.....Troughton had that goofy ass stovepipe hat. It sorta made him look well....goofy.

The hat only lasted for the first three episodes.

Those three episodes (Power of the Daleks, the Highlanders, and Underwater Menace) no longer exist in film form except for 'Menace Part 3." Which does not have the hat.

Coincedence? I THINK NOT!!!!

I sensed corruption when they wouldn't release the greatest British show ever: Adam Adamant Lives!

Tom Baker (for me) is the definitive WHO all round! Time is relative...and I think he grew so fast into his role because he was given the scope to!

Although I am not a fan of Colin Baker (preferring Sylvester McCoy's portrayal)...I DO believe he was never given the chance to develop into the role.

Jon Pertwee was my second favourite Doctor! Very dapper...and you just HAVE to love "Bessie".

Is it just me, or do you think that Bessie was really this weird creature from another planet that could transform from a car one instant to a hot sexy woman the next? It would make more sense, I think.

Sorta be like Gary Seven's cat in the Star Trek episode, "Assignment: Earth."
