I'm a casual (temporary) clerk at the Jacksonville BMC, and one thing that REALLY pisses me off happens after I'm told I'm working overtime. Some regular employees ask me if I'm staying late, and when I tell them I am and how long (usually 4 hours), they raise a real stink about it.They start bitching and whining that they should be getting overtime. Well, I have a bit of advice for them...they want overtime? VOLUNTEER AND SHUT THE HELL UP!! A regular gets benefits up the ying-yang, a casual gets jack shit! Some casuals need the money any way possible. It's not that difficult to comprehend, for chrissakes! [This message has been edited by Lord Destroyer (edited 10-28-2001).] |

And ANOTHER thing that REALLY gets up my nose is Tostito having a really stupid shot at me in Slacker's forum (after a bad night of asthma and struggling to breathe in this wretched Asthma Capital of Australia they call Brisbane, coutesy of my EX being an arsehole)...then you can watch him turn around and say I can't take a fecking joke! Oh yes, and like I should REALLY LOVE Brisbane when 3 days after I land, I end up back with this stupid bloody disease after being free of it for 6 months in the UK!!! DOUBLE And NOT ONE of my other relatives (except for Munky and my Mother) seem to understand that! Come on LD...got any more gripes? Misery loves company...and right now I am feeling pretty bloody miserable! |

Actually, many things piss me off. And one of them isn't Tostito. I have more things to do then give some pathetic out-of-work graduated-by-the-grace-of-God piece of toilet paper who has nothing better to do then bid for the laughter of others. I think we should all just realize that getting angry over him is pointless and we should just ignore him, much like anything with two X chromosomes does on a daily basis. But right now, my major pisser is trying to take a trip to England in January and not have to worry about terrorism. Through honestly, if my plane is jacked, I'm sure as hell keen to vent my spleen via screwdriver to the neck of anybody who dares fuck with my way of life. But honestly, I'm afraid I'm not in that bad of a mood. Plus, I just got some more cable channels to watch and one of them is Turner Classic Movies. Just in time for Halloween. Must...overdose...on bad...Black and White...FILMS!!

Another gripe...It pisses me off royally when I'm just walking around a bookstore (this usually happens at Books-A-Million, though it sometimes happens at B. Dalton or Barnes & Noble), just minding my own business when some idiot comes up to me and asks me if I work there. Part of me wants to scream at them, "No, you goddamn nimrod, I don't work here! Open your worthless eyes and take a closer look, dumbass!" I mean, for crying out loud, I don't wear a flippin' name tag or an apron with the bookstore's name on it! Just because I know what I'm looking for doesn't mean I work there! Good grief! I swear, people are getting dumber every day. Errrggghh! I've been subjected to that syndrome once or twice during my working life and I must say, it think it denotes a certain sheep-like quality to American life. Do they do this because fashion is now tended more to the professional type or is it because they no longer trust their judgment, preferring to let someone else tell them what they want and living a life of a simpleton?Honestly, sometimes I think it is the latter. People just need to think more, full stop. |

Amending my first gripe a bit...I talked to a couple of regulars today at work, and I was told they do volunteer for overtime. The problem is, most of the time when they volunteer, they don't get any overtime. Also, it bothers them when casuals get overtime and don't even request it. Heh...don't I know it. Just because I'm on the overtime desired list (4 hours maximum after the end of normal shift), it doesn't mean I want it every freakin' day, for chrissakes! Now, I have to provide a reason why I can't stay, otherwise there will be problems. That's blackmail! They want to know why there is some turnover among casuals? Some of them get sick and tired of the crap they deal with every day! There were days when I was leaving and I was grumbling, "Geez, I'd get more respect working at a fast-food joint." It appears to me the top brass at the BMC are looking for ways to cut costs, and one of the ways is see to it regulars don't get a lot of overtime, if any. Most regulars make about $13 to $25 an hour, and they make a little extra if they work any hours between 6 PM and 6 AM. Any hours worked per week in excess of 40 is calculated at 1 1/2 times the normal amount of pay, so that means even more dough to pay out. And there are certain days in which regulars can make a real fortune by working (usually holidays). It all adds up to a shitload of cash. By limiting their hours, the top brass think they're saving money. Too bad they don't take into consideration the morale of the employees. Sheesh. The way I see it, it's one thing to cut costs, it's another to cut corners. Cutting corners often leads to disaster, and that's just what I think is going on at work. It drives me crazy! Pardon me about the constant editings - I always seem to find something I need to rephrase after I post or edit. [This message has been edited by Lord Destroyer (edited 10-29-2001).]

Another work-related gripe...Today, everything was going nicely until around 4:45 PM. Up to then, I hadn't heard a single thing about whether I would be working overtime or not. By the time I get to that point in the day and I haven't heard anything, I'm thinking about how great it would be to go home, get a shower, and just kick back and relax for a few hours. But around that time, I'm told I'm working 4 hours overtime. What the hell is going on that they can't tell me earlier?! It used to be they'd tell me around 2:45 PM at the latest, and I'd eventually accept it. When they don't tell me anything until very late in the regular day, I don't like it one bit. If I haven't heard a single thing concerning overtime up to late in the day, I start thinking, "I'm tired, I want to go home." Like I stated before, just because I said my overtime preference would be 4 hours maximum after the end of the regular shift, it doesn't mean I want overtime every day! I used to have a say in whether I wanted overtime or not and they'd accept it. Now, I have to provide a reason why I can't stay. And when I don't have a reason, I have no other options available to me. It's a violation of the 13th Amendment (abolition of slavery), for crying out loud! I feel like a slave when they make me work 12 hours a day. Yeah, I know, I said it was blackmail earlier, but I was so angry I wasn't thinking straight then. |

I've been giving it serious consideration, Nick.I work my ass off for them (and for those inbreds who think it's a great idea to screw around instead of process mail) for at least eight hours, and do I get any thanks for it? Hardly. More like my being told to work another four hours, not to mention serious hassle concerning my paycheck on payday. I swear, it all went to hell in a handbasket when my old boss, Joe Howard, retired almost two years ago. But what sort of job to go for, I just don't know. I'll be damned before I stand behind a counter and say "Do you want fries with that?" ad infinitum and get paid peanuts for it. My parents want me to try teaching, but after what happened at Columbine (much as I get sick of mentioning it or hearing about it), I say NO WAY. Besides, Rodney Dangerfield gets more respect than teachers these days. But what keeps me there would be the fact they understood when I had things of pressing importance and they saw things my way. I can think of the following:
- They gave me time off to serve jury duty last week without any hassle.
- They let me take three days off back in March so I could go to Busch Gardens with the family.
- They understood early on when I was completing my degree that I needed certain days off so I could go to class.
The key is let them know early enough so something can be worked out. They'll be more willing to see things your way when you do a good job (which I do) and don't give them any guff (which again, I do). I guess I've been having a hard time at work recently and I need somewhere to vent my frustrations, otherwise I'd snap. [This message has been edited by Lord Destroyer (edited 10-31-2001).] |

They're showing the new episodes of Dragonball Z and it's gotten to the point the next major villain (Majin Buu) will make his first appearance. I would have seen even more if they didn't show a bunch of Scooby Doo stuff yesterday. Another gripe:Ordinarily, I don't have problems with Tostito, but I have to get this off my chest. I just checked his forum and he had the temerity to call me Lord Desperate-to-be-accepted or something like that in one thread and he tries tying it in with me talking about my job. Sheesh, where does he get his material? "2000 Insults for Retarded Fifth-Graders"? *shakes head in disbelief* No matter what he calls me, it's a hell of a lot better than being desperate to have more posts in his stagnant forum. With an attitude like his, he's going to be stuck in a dead-end job - that is, if he doesn't get fired within the first couple of weeks. I'm going to make something of myself, and when I do, he'll be eating so much crow he'll be shitting feathers for the rest of his life. It also bothers me when he gripes and whines about other people's posts, especially mine. A bit of advice for him - he doesn't like any of certain people's posts? DON'T READ THEM AND SHUT THE HELL UP, DIPWAD! It's obvious he uses his head for two things - keeping his ears apart, and for crushing beer cans. He claims he doesn't mind if people he alienated in the past post in his forum. I know better than that. I'm not falling for his half-witted attempt to make a sucker out of me. He can take his forum and stuff it. I don't care. [This message has been edited by Lord Destroyer (edited 11-06-2001).] |

Something else that bugs me to no end...I just can't stand it when I hear some simpleton argue that violence on TV, in movies, the Internet, and/or video games cause the violence on the streets. What bullshit! I watched violent movies, saw violence on TV, and played violent video games. Am I some bloodthirsty lunatic who gets his kicks from killing other people? HELL NO!! I suppose that's a reason why I didn't vote for Gore last year. I'll be damned if I have to put up with four years of hearing Joseph Lieberman spew that same crap about violence in video games ad infinitum. He's been proclaiming that crap ever since Mortal Kombat was popular in the arcades, about 10 years ago. And it's a reason why I'm sick and tired of hearing about the Columbine shooting. Shortly after it happened, I couldn't turn on the TV without some self-proclaimed "expert" scream about violence on TV and other stuff. Quite often, they would take certain things out of context in order to justify their stupidity. The shooting happened because the parents of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold didn't give a shit about what they were doing. What sort of parent would let their child store a shotgun in their dresser drawer, use Adolf Hitler as a role model, and build/store pipe bombs in the garage? A parent who doesn't give a damn about their kids, that's who! Blaming violence in forms of entertainment and trying to link it to violence on the streets is nothing more than looking for an easy solution. Violence has been around much longer than those idiots think. I dare them to make a link between violence in forms of entertainment and violence in the past. It will be comedy gold (to borrow a phrase from Tostito) just to watch those losers go at it, and they won't have an idea that a lot of people would be laughing at them for being such simpletons. |
