After a few weeks, guess what happened?

The laptop has been recovered! And just in time, because we were about to sign some documents with the insurance company concerning a replacement.

It turned out a so-called "friend" of LF's swiped it. I suspected that sticky-fingered bastard was the one who did it for a while now. The motive and opportunity was obvious - he was hanging around on the day the laptop was discovered missing and he doesn't have half the stuff that me and LF have accumulated.

From what I've been told, he wasn't doing well in school, so his computer stuff was taken away and sold. He figured we wouldn't miss the laptop - boy, was he wrong. It led to the filing of a police report and informing the insurance company about the theft.

The ends justify the means - what a load of bullshit.

Of all the days to be caught red-handed, he gets nailed on April Fool's Day. I heard he tried to lie his way out of it - why am I not surprised? I'm sure his parents are way beyond disappointed - hell, who wouldn't?

But not all is well about the situation, though. It turns out that maggot erased some stuff that can't be brought back and he changed almost all of the settings and loaded in a bunch of worthless crap in hopes of avoiding suspicion.

LF was able to undo about 50 - 80% of the mess that was changed or installed.

This whole mess leaves me between a rock and a hard place. I'm not justified to beat the crap out of that loser, but I feel an overwhelming need to do just that. I'm sure LF feels the same way.

I don't know whether charges should be pressed or not.

Well personally...I think charges should be pressed. It won't recover what was lost, but the mongrel needs to be taught a lesson!

Yeah, charge him, just don't pound him. He's hoping you will, because he can always come to the cops with it and get you in trouble too. He's not worth it.

I should add that anything he does get - CDs, tapes, whatever - doesn't last long because he doesn't take care of it. He leaves that stuff lying around so it gets scratched up or broken.

My suspicions were aroused when LF told me someone at school told him that he heard the so-and-so brag about getting a new laptop. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to get 4 when you put 2 and 2 together.

I'm sure that guy's parents are angry and very disappointed in him. They spent who knows how many years working to provide a roof over his head, clothes to wear, food to eat, and this is how he repays them?

The insurance company was contacted in this matter and that person's parents are going to hold him accountable for his actions - something you see less of every day.

If he's not doing what he is supposed to do according to what we've agreed on, there may be no other choice but to press charges - I think it will be something to do when all else fails.

RJ - You're right about not pounding him, it's not worth it.

My girlfriend told me the same thing a couple of years ago when three punks attacked an aunt and uncle of mine at their little grocery store in Alabama. No amount of time behind bars is worth getting even for somebody or something.

LD,

Either you can pound on his face or have some horny prisoner pound his asshole. Take your choice to see which is worse.

Sorry to be so blunt, but since he knowingly took it and tried to cover it up...face it, he's guility and should have charges pressed against him.

Couldn't have said it any better than that
Nicky!!
Its a bitch, especially when you know the
person, it seems to make them think that they
can get away with it, just cause they know you.
It's not right.

True, true.

Here's the agreement as far as I know:

The person's parents are financially responsible for any repairs and/or reinstallations of certain programs so it will be the way it was before the theft. The person who took it is a minor and therefore his parents are holding him accountable for his actions. I'm sure he's being punished at home as well.

The one who took the laptop is feeling sorry about it and wants to talk to me and LF either separately or together. My family has been on friendly terms with his family for many years and want it to continue like that.

Me and LF will be more vigilant of what he's doing and make sure he doesn't try something like that again.

Charges will be pressed if and only if the matter isn't resolved in a timely manner.

Dell will remove the flag concerning the laptop - when it was stolen, it was reported as stolen and Dell put a flag concerning it. If someone else tried to have it repaired/upgraded/whatever, and certain numbers or whatever matched, it would be flagged as stolen property. My family is expecting an e-mail from Dell concerning removal of the flag. Also, the warranty that was on the laptop before the theft will be reinstated.
