Ok, I need some help. Basically I have to write an art dissertation this year and over the next month I need to build up a basis for my essay by writing away to artists, interviewing them about the topic I've chosen and their approach to it through their art.

My theme is Light.

Does anyone have any clue of any artists who use light in their work. It could be a painter, photographer, sculpter etc. Or could anyone give me any information on how light is used in art forms?

Help. Please?

i use light to make pictures work!

you can talk about the useage of light in say paintins, or why artists choose to not use light. How light can be used to focus the attention of the viewer to a certain part of a piece of art. or you can talk about chirascero, damn you spelling abilties.

anyways ask laz, shes an artist, i just like to sound like i know what i am talking about..

I challenge you to find any artist who doesn't consider light when completing a work. In order to capture anything with paint, pastels etc. you need to study how the light hits the object.

yeah, what she said. Also, every photographer will have to consider light when taking pictures. Just pic your fav's and apply their work to your theme. Your cours must be alot different to mine.

I'd suggest presenting a bunch of pictures painted by El Greco in the later years of his life, and then explaining, "Like, I think, like, the absence of light, uh,like, has something to do with um, the fact that Prozac, like, wasn't invented yet."

Oh wait, that's what you'd do if you were head of the cheerleading team. Whoops, never mind.

This guy, Christopher Ries, does glass sculpture. And that relies on light.

Honestly, I'd investigate artists who work with sculpture, as it make the most active use of light.

I'm into video art and I went to see Bill Viola's exhibition in London not so long ago. Catherine's Room was one of his installation that used light and dark to good effect.

Hope it's of some help.

Thankyou everybody.

I wanted to use artists that incorporate light into their work, making it part of the art itself, rather than how it hits the object on a flat piece of work, although I understand that sort of thing because I use that in my own exhibitions.

I wanted to focus on sculpture because that's mainly what I do myself, especially figure work. I wanted to write about how people use shadow and light in their work and how the shadows and light form shapes and images of their own around the actual object, therefore making the light more of the art than the actual object.

That Christopher Ries thing is fantastic FJ but I can't seem to be able to contact him using the contact button on the site which is a bit shit because I have to write a questionnaire. But thankyou for your help, his stuff is great and I can definately incorporate him into my essay.

Bill Viola is also very helpful Laz, although he uses video which is not something I deal with myself, but a lot of his work uses light so thankyou for your help, I'll be using him too. Can't seem to find much on his recent Catherine's Room thing though, because it's so new and most of the sites only show up to '99 work.
