What is up with Gwen Stefani? A few months ago, she hooks up with Moby for a 'duet' in the song 'South Side' which makes little to no sense even for ol' Moby there. Now it seems like she's playing second banana to some dork named Eve, who seems to be the Bronze Buckaroo version of Roy Rogers.

So why is Gwen slumming? Despite my dislike for her and her music (glorified pop rock plus the fact she sounds HORRIBLE live), the women can sell records on her own with no problem despite the fact her hair must be a relative of DS9's Odo. I mean, it's one thing to duet with someone--suggesting that you're either helping them out but adknowledging you have some sort of talent money-making or not--but when you play backup vocals to a no-talent flash-pan effort such as Eve, what does that say?

Can anybody note the exact moment she started being a corporate whore? Anybody? I would, but since I'm biased I need someone with music experience (FJ, Mosrite, and :rocket tell give me another perspective. So, any opinions?

When No Doubt's new album did rather poorly saleswise... after being four years in the making...

She's doing what she can to keep her, and thusly her band in the spotlight, until the next album. That's my guess anyways.

Four years in the making? Goddamn, they've been a band for that long???

Well, thanks FJ.

They've been around since the early 80s. They were more of a traditional Two-Tone ska band. Brass section and all. They were featured on the original (and some would call legendary) California Skaquake compilation (MoonSka). I have a certain amount of respect for them, but the music does nothing for me.

I like No Doubt. I don't know why. Its the kind of music that most guys hear and are like, "What the hell are you listening to?!?"

But then, I have a cousin (guy) who listens to Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand pretty regularily. So, I don't feel that odd for liking music more geared to chicks. At least its not the kind of stuff geared towards old ladies and soccer moms.

And No Doubt has been around for quite awhile. Their music has gotten more mature as well. As a band, they've shown that they can evolve. I respect that.

My older brother used to sing along to "Just a Girl." To this day I don't really wish to know why.

I don't know as they've gotten "more mature" a lot of bands use that excuse because they have a hard time writing songs when they are so corporate. They aren't very ska anymore. Although I wish they were. I agree with fj, just trying to keep the name in the spotlight. Although moby usually has pretty good taste when it comes to female voices. He once said "I would like to use christina aguilara's voice but she is way too stupid" Well, maybe not that exactly. but thats what he meant.

I was about to call Case B but Mosrite beat me to it: the 'mature' label is another way to say that a band is growing stale. It may not be their fault, necessarily (music styles do wane) but in this case I can say that the band may be on it's way out of current style, possibly to find life at festivals where their past fame can only boost ticket sales so much.

I can't deny liking some of No Doubt's songs (I admit it), but their new album did suck. Upon reflection, I can't help but wondering if somehow, in some way, their appearance on "Behind the Music" sealed their fates. I mean, doesn't BtM tell the story of a band's rise and downfall?

I saw No Doubt live about 4 years ago, and they were incredible! Gwen sounded as good in person as she does on the CD...hard to do when you're running around a stage.

About 5 years ago, I thought they were amazing...and I still like them. Although I have to admit I haven't heard their newest CD.

but they've "evolved" (evolve usually means moving forward and becoming better) into utter crap. how can that be respected?

Oh please, mosrite,

you're just whining because Stefani sings about marriage, becoming old, and other nearing mid-life crises type things.

Oh wait...I guess that is pretty bad.

You know, now that I think about it...

Sometimes I wish for a mistake

That line still makes me shudder.

NOOOOOOO!

Y'know, I'm still in shock that we've gone over 9 posts in discussing Gwen Stefani. Can we talk about Cinder Block next?

Yay!
